Young Architect of the Year Award (YAYA)

The Young Architect of the Year Awards program, fondly known as the YAYA, was created to encourage renewal within the architectural community by recognizing and promoting the next generation of architects responsible for shaping the future of our built environment.

Mr. Lloyd Russell, AIA

Mr. Lloyd Russell, AIA holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.  Mr. Russell is currently teaching at Woodbury University as a co-director of the MRED (Masters in Real Estate Development) program.  Since 2003, he has been an elected member to the CCAC (Centre City Advisory Committee to the Centre City Development Corporation).

Throughout Mr. Russell’s professional career, he has produced multiple award-winning designs, including some through collaborative work with Smith & Others.  Lloyd’s residential project, “R3 Triangle Building” was awarded an Honor Award in the 2006 AIA Design Awards.  He acted as architect, developer and contractor on the prized project.  Mr. Russell comments, “The unique situations created by assuming the multiple roles of architect, developer and contractor-allow the architect to create buildings and spaces that could not be realized within the contemporary divisions of these roles in the building process.”

In bestowing the award, juror John Holmes, AIA, commented, “The panel was excited to see the impressive body of work that Lloyd has created to date in his young career, and we look forward to seeing what will come.”  Juror James Richärd, AIA added, “Lloyd’s commitment to teaching and participation in community organizations sets an example for other young architects to follow.”

"
Triangular sites are often the hardest...and this project takes full advantage of it."

Ms.
Gwendolyn Wright
It's such a great building on a terribly complicated site!

Ms. Anne Fougeron, AIA

From the interior, you forget about the planes, trains and automobiles outside!"
