2007 deliberation comments by jurors:

Mr. James Richärd, AIA

“One of the things that stood out for the panel on this project was the ultimate re-use of an existing home.  The architects created a wonderful modern living environment without sacrificing or destroying a vintage California Ranch home.  There was no need to build an opulent, oversized structure.  The home was modest but the detailing was impeccable.”

Mr. John Holmes, AIA

“This project reflects a sublime use of materials, and a subtle exchange of textures and material.  There are real moments of pleasure and surprise throughout.  The typical expectation you have walking into a ranch house is in this case, countered by a spatial experience that is fluid and without distraction.”

Mr. James Richärd, AIA

“This building was simple, to the point and very powerful.”

Ms. Angela Brooks, AIA, LEED

“Our panel was impressed by the inviting nature of the architecture.  The openness and circulation — the manner that students move through the building — worked very well.  And unexpected, playful details resulted in a building that opens itself to the student community and invites participation.”

Mr. John Holmes, AIA

“This mixed use project really hit all the right notes.  It is a project that leads by example, accomplishing great things with a modest budget and focus on energy efficiency.”

Ms. Angela Brooks, AIA, LEED

“The scale of this project was really an asset.  The way the buildings meet the street is very successful, along with the creativity in interlocking space between residences and commercial offices.”
